ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani struck out nine in six innings, Mickey Moniak delivered his second big hit of the series and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Minnesota Twins 4-2. Ohtani did not get a decision despite allowing only one run and two hits. It was the fourth time in 10 starts this season the two-way superstar has had nine or more strikeouts. Moniak, who had a tying triple Friday night, came through with a two-run double in the seventh to give the Halos a 3-1 advantage. Alex Kirilloff homered and Carlos Correa had an RBI double for the Twins, who dropped four of six on their Southern California road trip.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins placed second baseman Jorge Polanco on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Thursday because of a strained left hamstring. This is the second time this season Polanco is missing time because of a left leg injury. He missed the first 19 games of the season because of inflammation in his left knee. He is hitting .284 with four home runs, seven doubles and 14 RBIs in 23 games.

IOWA CITY — Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller says his Hawkeyes have lived up to expectations this season. Iowa closed the regular season with a record of 39-13 and will be the #3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha. They take on 6th-seeded Michigan in the tournament opener Tuesday morning.

The Hawkeyes have played well down the stretch. They enter the conference tournament having won 16 of their last 20 games.

Sophomore Marcus Morgan will start on the mound against the Wolverines. He was lifted early in Iowa’s 15-3 win over Northwestern last Thursday.

Michigan is 26-26 overall and finished 13-11 in the Big Ten.

2nd-seed Indiana and 7th-seed Illinois are in Iowa’s half of the bracket. The other half of the bracket has top-seed Maryland facing 8th-seed Michigan State and 4th-seed Nebraska facing 5th-seed Rutgers in the other first-round games.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The University of Iowa softball team won the 2023 National Invitational Softball Championships (NISC) on Saturday at the Triple Crown Sports facility in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Hawkeyes defeated Maryland, 4-3, in the semifinals before beating BYU, 9-7, in the championship game.

Trailing by three runs (7-4) in the top of the seventh of the championship game, Iowa rallied for five runs, all with two outs, to reclaim the lead over BYU and ultimately prevail.

Iowa finished the 2023 season with a 35-27 record.

CHICAGO — Iowa’s Kris Murray tried to solidify himself as a first round pick in the upcoming NBA Draft at the combine in Chicago. Murray announced he will skip his senior season with the Hawkeyes after a junior campaign in which he averaged better than 20 points and nearly eight rebounds. He also learned from twin brother, Keegan, that he will need to carve out a role on the team that takes him.

Kris believes he has the mind set it takes to be a pro.

It has been quite a journey for Kris who was lightly recruited while at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School.

The draft will be June 22nd in New York City.
