CHICAGO (AP) — Miguel Sanó hit a three-run homer in Minnesota’s five-run first inning, and the Twins pounded Dylan Covey and the Chicago White Sox 11-1 to strengthen their hold on the AL Central. Jorge Polanco, Jonathan Schoop and Max Kepler also connected as Minnesota ran its major league-leading total to 205 home runs. The Twins went deep 11 times while taking three of four in the series and moved two games ahead of second-place Cleveland, which lost 9-6 at Kansas City.

 

CHICAGO (AP) — The AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins have acquired veteran reliever Sergio Romo in a trade with Miami, hoping to boost their beleaguered bullpen for the stretch. The deadline for making deals to have players eligible for the postseason is Wednesday. The Twins got the 36-year-old Romo, minor league pitcher Chris Vallimont and a player to be named for minor league first baseman Lewin Diaz. Romo was 2-0 with 17 saves and a 3.58 ERA in 38 games this season. Romo joined the Minnesota Twins in Chicago on Sunday after he was acquired in the trade. The Twins begin a three-game series in Miami on Tuesday night, but the veteran reliever wanted to get started right away with his new team.

 

DES MOINES — After escaping Pekin on Friday afternoon, the Newman baseball team now knows all the details about the semifinal round of the Class 1A state baseball tournament. The Knights survived a comeback attempt by Pekin, holding on for an 8-7 victory, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. The Knights will now face 6th-ranked Don Bosco at 11 o’clock on Thursday morning at Principal Park in Des Moines. Don Bosco beat Coon Rapids-Bayard 3-1 in the first quarterfinal on Friday. In quarterfinal round games played on Saturday, 3rd-ranked Alburnett beat South Winneshiek 13-4, while 10th-ranked St. Mary’s of Remsen beat 2nd-ranked Martensdale-St. Marys 4-2. Alburnett and St. Mary’s of Remsen will play the second semifinal game at about 1:30 on Thursday.

CLEAR LAKE — Clear Lake senior Jaylen DeVries has verbally committed to Southern Illinois University to play football. DeVries threw for 1828 yards and 22 touchdowns without an interception in his junior year with the Lions. In a tweet, DeVries thanked his family for everything they’ve done, shaping him into the person he his today. He also thanked his teammates for pushing him every single day, as well as the programs that believed in his abilities and morals as a person. The Salukis were 2-9 last year, finishing 1-7 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

 

 

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Chase Briscoe passed Christopher Bell with seven laps to go and won the NASCAR Xfinity race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday night for his first victory of the year.

Briscoe’s only other Xfinity victory came last season on Charlotte’s oval.

Bell led a career-high 235 out of 250 laps, but old tires allowed Briscoe to take over and clinch a playoff berth in the No. 98 Ford.

John Hunter Nemechek was third, followed by Noah Gragson and points leader Tyler Reddick. Cole Custer, who entered the race in third place, got loose and crashed into the wall with 90 laps to go.

 

 

DES MOINES — A world record highlighted the final day of the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines. Olympic gold medalist Dalilah Muhammad smashed the 16-year-old world record in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52-point-20 seconds.

Muhammad broke the record about two weeks after suffering a mild concussion after a fall in practice.

Muhammad admits the record has been on her mind this year.

Sioux City native Shelby Houlihan was a double winner for the second straight year. Houlihan took command on the final lap to win the 5000 meter run after winning the 1500 on Saturday. Des Moines native Karissa Schweizer finished second.

Houlihan stayed with the leaders before taking control on the final lap.

The USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships wrapped up on Sunday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
