MASON CITY — Top-ranked Newman had their state record 13 straight state tournament appearances snapped on Saturday night as the Knights were knocked off by Northwood-Kensett 8-3 in the Class 1A District 3 championship game, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. Ethan Tasker had an RBI double in the first to put the Vikings ahead 1-0, but Northwood-Kensett then scored six times in the third, highlighted by a grand slam by Cade Hengesteg. The Vikings closed out their scoring in the fifth with a solo homer from Jace Gentz. Newman scored three times in the sixth with an Eli Brinkley single followed later with a pair of bases-loaded walks. Newman then stranded two more in the seventh to end the ballgame. Newman with the loss ends their season with a 34-2 record. Northwood-Kensett improves to 14-14 and will face Kee High of Lansing in the 1A Substate 2 championship game on Tuesday night in Charles City. Kee beat South Winneshiek 4-2 in the District 4 championship game played in New Albin on Saturday night.

 

GARNER — New Hampton ended Garner-Hayfield-Ventura’s baseball season with a 7-3 win in the Class 2A District 6 championship game in Garner on Saturday night. The Cardinals end their season with a 21-5 record. New Hampton is now 18-15 and advance to face top-ranked Roland-Story in the Substate 3 championship game on Tuesday night at Roosevelt Field in Mason City. Roland-Story beat South Hamilton 3-0 in the District 5 championship on Saturday night.

 

 

MASON CITY — Mason City High and Clear Lake won their first-round substate games on Friday night and now play in substate semifinals tonight:

== Mason City edged Fort Dodge 3-2 on Friday night in Mason City to advance to tonight’s substate semifinal at Southeast Polk. The Mohawks are 23-16 while Southeast Polk comes in at 24-17 after a 12-2 win over Ames on Friday. The teams have not faced each other this season. You can hear the Mason City-Southeast Polk game on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com starting at about 7 o’clock tonight. The winner travels to 4th-ranked Dowling on Wednesday night for the substate championship game.

== Clear Lake advanced to the substate semifinals with an 18-1, four-inning win over Algona on Friday night. They now face 6th-ranked Webster City tonight. The Lynx are 25-1 after a 10-0, six-inning win over Eagle Gove in the substate quarterfinals. Webster City won both North Central Conference regular season meetings earlier this year, 6-3 in Clear Lake on June 2nd and 10-1 in Webster City on June 21st. FORT DODGE — The state softball tournament starts in Fort Dodge today with quarterfinal-round games in Classes 1A, 2A, and 3A:

== Central Springs makes another trip down to the tournament, being the third seed in the Class 2A field. They’ll face sixth-seed Underwood this evening. The Panthers are 29-6 after edging South Hardin 2-1 in a regional championship game last Monday night, while the Eagles are 26-3 after a 4-2 regional final win over West Monona. You can hear the Central Springs-West Monona game tonight on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com with the first pitch scheduled for 5:30. The winner faces either second-seed North Linn or seventh-seed Regina of Iowa City in Wednesday afternoon’s semifinals, with the losers of the two games playing Tuesday afternoon in a consolation contest.

== North Butler will be looking for an upset when the Bearcats take on top ranked Newell-Fonda Monday morning in the class 1A opener at the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge. Coach Beth Endelman’s team has won 11 of its last 12. The only loss was a 4-3 setback to West Fork back on June 30.

Endelman says that loss taught them what it takes to win close games.

North Butler is in the tournament for the first time since 2014.

DETROIT (AP) — Jeimer Candelario homered, drove in three runs and started two double plays as the Detroit Tigers finished a weekend sweep of the Minnesota Twins with a 7-0 win. The game was the seventh in a row between the teams. Minnesota swept a four-game series at home immediately before the All-Star break before losing three in Detroit. The series was originally scheduled for four games, but Friday’s doubleheader was rained out. The Tigers swept a doubleheader on Saturday. The Twins now head to Chicago for a four-game series with the White Sox that starts with a traditional doubleheader today. We’ll have the start of game one at 3:30 with the pre-game and 4:10 the first pitch on AM-1300 KGLO and then join the rest of the broadcast after Central Springs softball and Mason City High baseball coverage.
