IOWA CITY — Iowa buckled down defensively in the second half in a 71-59 victory over Minnesota on Sunday, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. With Fran McCaffery sidelined by COVID assistant Billy Taylor was in the pilot’s seat.

The Hawkeyes trailed 38-34 at halftime.

Taylor says he challenged the Hawkeyes at halftime to pick it up defensively.

Keegan Murray had 24 points and 15 rebounds and Patrick McCaffery added 18 points as the Hawkeyes improve to 5-6 in the Big Ten.

 

 

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Marcus Carr and Andrew Jones each scored 14 points and No. 23 Texas used a barrage of 3-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half to pull away from No. 20 Iowa State for a 63-41 victory on Saturday in Austin. Carr’s 3-pointer at the start of the second half was the first of six over nine minutes to help Texas stretch a two-point halftime lead into double digits. Izaiah Brockington scored 12 for Iowa State but made just one basket in the second half.

 

 

 

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Noah Carter had 23 points as Northern Iowa narrowly defeated Drake 74-69 in overtime Saturday in Des Moines. Tucker DeVries led the Bulldogs on Saturday with 15 points and eight rebounds.

 

 

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN — A late rally came up short as the 21st ranked Iowa Hawkeye women lost at sixth ranked Michigan 98-90. Caitlin Clark scored 25 of her career high 46 points in the fourth quarter as the Hawkeyes cut a 25 point deficit to five.

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. The Hawkeyes were without injured starters Gabbie Marshall and McKenna Warnock and were outrebounded 49-30.

Iowa scored 36 points in the fourth quarter.

Iowa is 9-3 in the Big Ten.

 

 

DES MOINES — Mason City native Megan Meyer was 4-for-7 from three-point range and led Drake with 18 points in an 84-76 win over Loyola on Sunday at the Knapp Center in Des Moines.

 

OSAGE — Osage had ten district qualifiers in winning the Class 2A sectional they hosted on Saturday. The Green Devils had seven champions and three runners-up in accumulating 265 team points. Hampton-Dumont-CAL finished second with 241 points, with nine qualifiers including six champions. Osage will host a regional dual on Tuesday and face the winner of the Webster City and West Marshall semifinal match. Hampton-Dumont-CAL will travel to Winterset and face Carroll in the semifinal with the winner facing Winterset. Full results of the sectional here

 

 

LAKE MILLS — Central Springs won the Class 1A sectional at Lake Mills on Saturday. The Panthers had 220 points with seven district qualifiers including three champions. Lake Mills finished second with 199 points, having four champions and three runners-up. Newman had 174.5 points to finish third with three champions moving to the district tournament. Central Springs will wrestle against MFL-Mar-Mac in a regional dual on Tuesday night in Nashua with the winner to face Nashua-Plainfield. Lake Mills will wrestle Emmetsburg on Tuesday night in Britt with the winner to face West Hancock. Full results of the sectional here

 

 

JEWELL — Emmetsburg won the 1A sectional in Jewell on Saturday with 248 points. West Hancock finished second with 212 points, with eight qualifiers including three champions. Full results of the sectional here

 

 

CLARKSVILLE — Nashua-Plainfield won the 1A sectional in Clarksville on Saturday with 240 points, South Winneshiek was second with 175.5. North Butler-Clarksville finished fourth with 136 points and four champions. Full results of the sectional here
