DES MOINES — North-central Iowa had two champions at the state wrestling tournament over the weekend:

== Eric Faught needed a takedown in sudden-victory overtime to give the Clear Lake senior a 3-1 win in the Class 2A 132-pound championship match over Jack Gaukel of Sergeant Bluff-Luton. It was the third time Faught had been in a state title match, finishing second in his freshman and junior years and finishing third as a sophomore. Faught’s championship helped Clear Lake finish third in the Class 2A team race with 62.5 points. West Delaware won the 2A title with 76.5 points, while Spirit Lake Park finished one point ahead of Clear Lake for second.

== For the fourth straight week, Zach Ryg of Central Springs and Chase McCleish of Newman met in a championship match, and Ryg came out on top in each of those meetings. After winning the Top of Iowa Conference, sectional and district titles, Ryg became the third wrestler in Central Springs history to win a state title as he beat McCleish 5-1 in the Class 1A 195-pound championship. Central Springs as a team had the highest finish of any of the area Class 1A teams, ending up in a tie for 8th with 43 points. Don Bosco won the team title with 151 points.

== Mason City High’s two finalists fell in their Class 3A state title matches. In the 106-pound final, Jace Rhodes lost for the third time this season to Trever Andersen of Ankeny, this time by a 7-0 decision. In the 138-pound title match, Colby Schriever was pinned by Eli Loyd of Pleasant Valley with 55-seconds to go in the second period. Mason City finished 12th in the team race with 59 points. Waverly-Shell Rock won the team title with 157 points.

 

 

CLARION — The Clear Lake girls basketball team’s season came to an end in the 3A regional final on Saturday night in Clarion, falling to Roland-Story 44-43, as you heard on KRIB. Clear Lake finishes the season with a 17-5 record.

 

 

CHARLES CITY — Osage also lost in their bid for an appearance in the state tournament. The Green Devils lost to Crestwood 53-49 in the 3A regional final played in Charles City on Saturday night. Osage ends their season with a 20-2 record.

 

 

MASON CITY — The Mason City High girls had no issues in their post-season opener on Saturday. The Mohawks were up 58-21 at the half and cruised to a 98-31 win over Decorah in a 4A regional semifinal that you heard on KGLO. Megan Meyer had 39 points in the win. Mason City will host Gilbert on Tuesday in the regional final at 7 o’clock, a game you’ll hear on KGLO starting at about 6:45.

PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY — The 21st ranked Iowa Hawkeye men recorded win number 20 with their second straight buzzer beater back on Saturday.

Gary Dolphin and Bobby Hansen on the Hawkeye Network. Joe Weiskamp (wees-camp) banked in as corner three pointer to beat the buzzer in a 71-69 win at Rutgers.

Weiskamp’s basket came after the length inbounds pass was deflected.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Lindell Wigginton hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Talen Horton-Tucker buried six 3s and had 20, and No. 23 Iowa State pulled away late for a 78-64 victory over No. 18 Kansas State on Saturday to tighten up the Big 12 title race.

Marial Shayok added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Cyclones (19-6, 8-4), who pulled within a game of the Wildcats (19-6, 9-3) with six games to go in the conference schedule.

The road win also pulled Texas Tech and Kansas back in the championship picture.
Iowa State wound up going 14 of 24 from beyond the 3-point line, shooting right over Kansas State’s vaunted defense, which had been holding to teams to fewer than 60 points on average this season.

 

 

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Brady Ellingson had 21 points as Drake narrowly beat Valparaiso 84-79 on Saturday.

Nick McGlynn had 16 points and nine rebounds for Drake (20-7, 9-5 Missouri Valley Conference). Tremell Murphy added five assists.

Deion Lavender had 16 points and six rebounds for the Crusaders (13-14, 6-8). Javon Freeman added 15 points and five steals. Derrik Smits had 15 points.

The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 against the Crusaders this season. Drake defeated Valparaiso 70-59 on Jan. 26. Drake faces Bradley at home on Tuesday. Valparaiso plays Southern Illinois at home on Wednesday.

 

 

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — AJ Green had 21 points as Northern Iowa beat Evansville 73-58 on Sunday.

Trae Berhow had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Northern Iowa (12-15, 7-7 Missouri Valley Conference), which ended its five-game road losing streak. Spencer Haldeman added 14 points. Wyatt Lohaus had 11 points and eight rebounds for the visitors.

Shea Feehan had 14 points for the Purple Aces (10-17, 4-10) whose losing streak reached four games. K.J. Riley added 12 points and six rebounds. Shamar Givance had 10 points.

Marty Hill, who was second on the Purple Aces in scoring entering the matchup with 11 points per game, shot only 20 percent in the game (1 of 5).

The Panthers improve to 2-0 against the Purple Aces this season. Northern Iowa defeated Evansville 81-74 on Jan. 26. Northern Iowa takes on Missouri State on the road on Wednesday. Evansville plays Loyola of Chicago on the road on Wednesday.

 

 

IOWA CITY — The Big Ten women’s race is tied. Iowa closed the game on a 9-0 run as the 13th ranked Hawkeyes pulled away from an 86-73 win over seventh ranked Maryland. Both teams are 12-3 in the league race.

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. Megan Gustafson finished with 31 points and 17 rebounds and much of the damage was done in the second half.

With two their last three games on the road Bluder says the Hawkeyes face a difficult path to a championship.

Mason City native Makenzie Meyer played 35 minutes, scoring eight points and dishing out four assists. Iowa travels to Indiana on Thursday.
