DES MOINES — Don Bosco ended Newman’s three year run as state champion on Saturday. Charlie Hogan’s RBI double down the third base line capped a two-run bottom of the sixth as the seventh-ranked Dons rallied for a 3-2 win over the sixth-ranked Knights in the 1A championship game, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com. Freshman Doug Taylor had a two-run single for Newman and pitched five-and-two-thirds innings before being lifted by the pitch count. While disappointed with the loss, Taylor was thankful they had the chance to play the season.

Newman scored both runs in the fifth but coach Alex Bohl felt the Knights let a chance to build a bigger lead slip away.

Bohl says it was a rewarding season that began with a lot of questions.

Newman finishes the season with a record of 19-6.

IOWA CITY — Iowa All-American Luka Garza has withdrawn from the NBA Draft and will return for his senior season. Garza averaged nearly 24 points and 10 rebounds last season in being named the Big Ten Player of the Year.

With Garza back the Hawkeyes will be one of the favorites in the Big Ten.

Garza says the chance to play with a special Iowa team was a big factor in his decision.

Garza says concern over how next season will be affected by the pandemic was not a factor in his decision.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says Garza informed his teammates Sunday morning.

McCaffery says Garza did his homework and made an informed decision.

The Hawkeyes posted a record of 20-11 last season but lost out on the postseason at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Mitch Garver hit his first home run of the season and the Minnesota Twins used their bullpen to string together a two-hitter in a 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians. The Twins took the four-game series from their primary division competitor. Max Kepler doubled and scored in each of his first two at-bats against Indians starter Aaron Civale. The defending American League Central champion Twins have outscored their opponents 28-8 over the first three innings this year. The Twins allowed only four runs over these four games, winning three of them to raise their record to 7-2.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Cleveland manager Terry Francona left the team before Sunday’s game at Minnesota. The Indians say he has a minor gastrointestinal condition that’s not related to COVID-19. The 61-year-old Francona returned to the team hotel. First base coach Sandy Alomar Jr. took over managing duty for the four-game series finale against the Twins. Francona sat out one game last season because of surgery for a tear in one of his retinas. Three years ago, he missed a week for a procedure to address an irregular heartbeat.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Jared Spurgeon scored twice and Alex Stalock stopped 28 shots to get his first career postseason win, leading the Minnesota Wild in a 3-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks in Game 1 of their qualifying series. Kevin Fiala also scored — one of Minnesota’s two power-play goals. Eric Staal had two assists and Spurgeon sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final minute. Jacob Markstrom, making his first career postseason start, also finished with 28 saves for Vancouver. Game 2 of the best-of-five series is Tuesday.
