Mississippi Man Sentenced To 8.5 Years In Prison For Assaulting A 12-year-old During A Multi-state Crime Spree

A Mississippi man has been sentenced to 8.5 years in prison for crimes involving a minor, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin. After pleading guilty earlier this year, Reginal Wright, 38, of Indianola, Mississippi, received his sentence last Friday for driving to Madison, Wisconsin, to abuse a 12-year-old girl he picked up from her foster home. The legal system’s verdict involves not only a 102-month sentence but also a 10-year supervised release.

Wright’s troubling According to a statement from the United States Attorney’s Office, the trip on November 7, 2023, included not just Wisconsin but also Tennessee and Florida, where sexual assaults proceeded. His arrest came after law enforcement successfully recovered the girl, who was traveling from Florida to Atlanta on a Greyhound bus. Prior to the girl’s recovery, various law enforcement agencies coordinated the delicate task of tracing her location across state lines.

During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge William M. Conley criticized Wright’s behavior, noting that the offender preyed on a defenseless youngster and made a “sordid decision” that caused pain for the little victim. Reflecting on the gravity of the offense, Judge Conley noted a “gaping age difference” between Wright and the kid, emphasizing the predator’s terrible abuse of power over someone so visibly infantile, as reported by the US Attorney’s Office.

Several law enforcement agencies, including the Madison Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, worked together on the multi-state pursuit. Florida agencies, including the Florida Highway Patrol and the police departments of Medley, Fort Pierce, Cocoa, and Lake City, as well as the Columbia County Florida Sheriff’s Office, played critical roles in Wright’s arrest and the victim’s rescue. It was also part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a national campaign to eliminate child sexual exploitation and abuse by improving cooperation across federal, state, and local activities. Project Safe Childhood’s website contains information on the initiative, demonstrating its commitment to punishing perpetrators and assisting victims.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman oversaw the prosecution, demonstrating an unshakable dedication to bringing justice in cases involving such predatory behavior. This recent sentencing highlights the crucial issue of child exploitation and the importance of watchful community and law enforcement collaborations to protect the innocent and hold offenders accountable for their acts.
