Mayor: five people unaccounted for, two possibly still in apartment building after collapse in Davenport

DAVENPORT (AP) — Davenport’s mayor says five people are unaccounted for and two were possibly still inside a Davenport apartment building that partially collapsed on Sunday evening.

One woman was rescued from the six-story building late Monday night after authorities had said no known people were left inside.

Now protesters are calling for a delay in the city’s demolition order, concerned that more people could be trapped. No fatalities have been reported in the Sunday evening collapse.

Multiple news reports say a woman was rescued Monday night, about 27 hours after the collapse, after calling her family and waving for help.

There’s now a gaping hole in what was once the historic Davenport Hotel, where many residents had complained of unmet maintenance needs.
