Mason City men detained for allegedly trying to break into rural Worth County building

FERTILE — Two Mason City men have been arrested after attempting to burglarize a Worth County property.

A criminal complaint filed by the Worth County Sheriff’s Department says a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of 348th Street just west of Fertile on Friday morning for a possible burglary in progress. When the deputy arrived on the scene, the owner of the property said he had video of two males on the property who were trying to get into one of the buildings.

The males were located walking out of the trees on the north side of the property, with a backpack later being found in the trees that contained saw blades, tin snips and other items used typically to cut off converters or locks.

40-year-old Brandon Smith and 38-year-old Joshua Sellers have each been charged with attempted burglary, possession of burglar tools and trespassing. Both men are due in court for preliminary hearings on March 15th.
