Major Rain, Snow, and Ice Event Could Hit Missouri in the Coming Days

Missouri Braces for Potential Winter Storm as Models Predict Heavy Snow, Ice, and Rain

Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts are closely monitoring a potential winter storm that could impact Missouri in the coming days. According to computer models, the state may experience a significant weather event starting late Saturday night, January 5, 2025, involving heavy snow, freezing rain, and ice.

The GFS model, considered one of the most reliable for winter weather forecasting, predicts snow in northern Missouri, freezing precipitation in the southwestern region, and a complex mix of snow, ice, and rain as the system moves through on Sunday, January 6. The wintry conditions are expected to persist until Monday, January 7, with possible thunderstorms in parts of Missouri and Illinois if the model’s projections hold.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in St. Louis has highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the storm due to variations in timing and temperature. Their long-term forecast suggests that if temperatures rise before the system arrives, the state may see liquid precipitation during daylight hours. However, if temperatures remain low and precipitation occurs at night, the risk of frozen precipitation increases.

The Climate Prediction Center has placed most of Missouri at a slight risk for heavy snow next weekend, adding to concerns about the storm’s potential impact.

Experts are urging residents to monitor official updates from the National Weather Service, which will provide accurate and timely warnings as the storm approaches. While some remain hopeful that the storm’s severity could diminish, the possibility of significant disruptions has prompted early alerts.

With the first week of January shaping up to bring severe winter weather, Missourians are advised to prepare for challenging conditions in the days ahead.
