Hud Makes $175 Million Accessible To Alleviate Homelessness

On Monday, the Department of Housing and Urban Development declared that it will be providing $175 million for the construction, purchase, and renovation of properties to create permanent supportive housing for individuals who have previously experienced homelessness. This is the first time that the department has made this amount of funding available for this particular purpose.

Joan Serviss, CEO of Arizona’s housing department, emphasized that partnering with AHCCCS, the state’s Medicaid agency, will be a significant advantage for Arizona. Additionally, the state can leverage its funds dedicated to this issue, along with any available local funds, to further support the cause.

According to Serviss, the best way to utilize funds is by providing wrap-around services and housing, regardless of where the money goes. He further added that this strategy is more cost-effective, especially with the rising interest in relocating semiconductor production within the state.

Serviss emphasized the need for accessible housing not just for the employees of businesses, but also for individuals serving them, including teachers, first responders, baristas, and those in the hospitality industry. “We must ensure that these individuals are not priced out of housing,” Serviss stated.

Although Maricopa and Pima Counties are expected to apply separately from the 13 counties that her office represents, Serviss emphasized that any amount received will be beneficial for the entire state.
