IOWA CITY — University of Iowa President Bruce Harreld hopes athletic practices, including football, can resume on June 1st. Herrald made his comments to the Board of Regents following Big Ten Conference meetings that considered options for the upcoming football season.

Harreld believes six to eight weeks of practice are needed to ensure player safety for the football season.

Iowa’s first game is scheduled for September 5th when they host Northern Iowa

IOWA CITY — Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery says he is not sure which way center Luka Garza is leaning but he has returned to Iowa City. Garza placed his name into the NBA Draft but left open the option of returning for his senior season.

McCaffery says he is preparing for next season expecting to have Garza on the team.

McCaffery says Garza’s evaluation was hampered by the cancellation of the draft combine.

McCaffery says they are not looking at adding any players for next season.

This past weekend Joe Wieskamp announced he was bypassing the 2020 NBA Draft process and returning for his junior season.

BOONE — High school wrestling teams will have the option of participating in dual team post-season events starting next season. The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control recently approved five recommendations from the wrestling advisory committee. Schools will be allowed to opt out of dual team postseason events by the first competition date. In Classes 1A and 2A, the 16 sectional champions as well as the next eight highest-ranked teams by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association will qualify for regional dual tournaments. If a sectional champion opted out of the dual team post-season, the next highest ranked team would qualify. Other recommendations approved include seeding all 16 wrestlers in each bracket of the state traditional tournament, reducing the state traditional tournament seeding criteria regarding common opponents from two points back to one point, and to allow host tournament directors to determine the length of sub-varsity matches at local regular season events. The wrestling advisory committee previously met in February to discuss the state dual tournament and wrestling post-season dates, but no changes were recommended by the advisory committee at that time.
