COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND — After a slow start it was all 5th-ranked Iowa at Maryland. The Hawkeyes used a 20-0 run to blow the game open and rolled to an 89-67 win on Thursday, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO. Luka Garza had 24 points but it was the bench that triggered the first half run.

The Hawkeyes improve to 4-1 in the Big Ten and 10-2 overall.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery used two early timeouts as the Hawkeyes fell behind by 10 in the opening minutes of the game.

The Hawkeyes got 33 points from the bench.

Iowa hosts Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at 1:30, with the pre-game at 12:30 on KGLO.

 

 

— Corey Miner had 33 points to lead Mason City past #6/3A Waverly-Shell Rock 50-42 last night in Waverly. Miner was 12-22 from the field and 6-8 from the free throw line. Mason City is now 3-7 on the season and will host Fort Dodge as part of a CIML Iowa Conference basketball doubleheader that you’ll hear on AM-1300 KGLO starting at 6:15 tonight.

MASON CITY — 4th-ranked Fort Dodge used seven pins, two technical falls and a major decision to pick up a 68-9 win over Mason City last night in what was also a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the state’s first-ever wrestling dual between high school teams. Jace Rhodes and Cooper Wiemann had the lone wins for the Mohawks, who are scheduled to travel to Cresco for a tournament on Saturday. Mason City and Fort Dodge faced each other on January 15th 1921 in Iowa’s first high school wrestling dual at the Armory in Fort Dodge, with Mason City winning that dual 24-19.

 

 

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt had eight pins, three wins by forfeit and two decisions in beating Clear Lake 72-6 in a North Central Conference dual last night in Humboldt, as you heard on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB and kribam.com. Max Currier had Clear Lake’s lone win at 120 pounds as he picked up a pin. Clear Lake travels to the Forest City Invitational on Saturday
