IOWA CITY — Sixth ranked Michigan State used a 24-2 run in the second half to erase an eight point deficit and cruised home to an 82-67 win at 19th ranked Iowa, as you heard last night on AM-1300 KGLO. Luka Garza led Iowa with 20 points.

Iowa led 35-31 in the opening half before giving up 51 second half points.

Iowa was only five of 24 from three point range, including just one of 11 in the second half. Hawkeye coach Fran McCaffery

With the win the Spartans move to 9-0 in the Big Ten. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo.

Next up for Iowa is a trip to Minnesota on Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 o’clock, with the pre-game starting at 3 o’clock on AM-1300 KGLO.

 

 

AMES — Iowa State coach Steve Prohm hopes the Cyclones can finally get a win in the Big-12/SEC Challenge. The Cyclones take a 14-5 record on Saturday to 20th ranked Ole Miss.

Prohm says under coach Kermit Davis the Rebels are tough on defense.

Prohm says there is plenty of room for improvement.

Ole Miss is 14-4 after a lopsided loss at Alabama.

 

 

DES MOINES — Tournament pairings for Classes 1A, 2A and 3A have been released for girls basketball.

== In Class 3A Region 2, 4th-ranked Clear Lake will host Pocahontas in a regional quarterfinal on Saturday February 9th. 11th-ranked Roland-Story lies on the other side of the bracket.

== In Class 1A Region 2, Newman starts out tournament play by hosting North Iowa on Thursday February 7th. The ranked teams in this region are #7 Clarksville and #15 Kee.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Karl-Anthony Towns had 27 points and 12 rebounds to help the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Los Angeles Lakers 120-105. Andrew Wiggins added 23 points and Jerryd Bayless scored 16 off the bench for the Timberwolves, who have won three straight.

FOREST CITY — 22 ranked wrestlers are scheduled to compete in the Top of Iowa Conference wrestling tournament in Forest City tomorrow. Lake Mills is ranked 10th as a team in Class 1A with four ranked wrestlers. Newman, Central Springs, Osage and West Hancock each have three ranked wrestlers, while North Butler-Clarksville has two. The feature weight class of the tournament appears to be at 195 with #1 Zach Ryg of Central Springs and 2nd-ranked Chase McCleish of Newman. Wrestling starts at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning. We’ll have updates from the tournament at :05 and :35 after the hour starting at 10:35 on AM-1490 & 96.7-FM KRIB, kribam.com and via the KRIB mobile app, with live play-by-play coverage of the championship round later on Saturday afternoon.

 

 

PLEASANT VALLEY — Seven of Class 3A’s top ten teams will be competing in the Central Iowa Metro League wrestling tournament later today. Southeast Polk is top-ranked with nine ranked individuals. West Des Moines Valley is ranked third as a team, with Fort Dodge fourth and Waukee fifth. Mason City only has seven wrestlers entered into the tournament with top-ranked 120-pounder Cullan Schriever still out with an ankle injury. The Mohawks have three other ranked wrestlers that are competing in the tournament with Jace Rhodes ranked 10th at 106, Colby Schriever ranked 5th at 138, and Troy Monahan ranked 4th at 285. Wrestling starts at 4 o’clock at Southeast Polk High School in Pleasant Valley.
