MASON CITY — Kealan Curley and Elyse Ball combined for 37 of Newman’s 47 points as the Knights beat Rockford 47-30 in a Class 1A girls basketball regional first round game in Mason City last night, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com. Ball scored 22 while Curley had 15. Newman is now 12-10 overall and will face Waterloo Christian at home on Tuesday in the 1A Region 1 quarterfinal round.

LAWRENCE — After several near misses in Big 12 play Iowa State was no match for Kansas. The Jayhawks outscored the Cyclones 58-37 in the second half in a 97-64 win. ISU is 0-10 in conference play.
That’s Iowa State coach Steve Prohm who felt his team had made a lot of progress in the past week.
It will be a quick turnaround as the Cyclones host Kansas in a rematch on Saturday.
Jalen Coleman-Lands led the Cyclones with 20 points.
LINCOLN — Freshman Caitlin Clark had a season-high 39 points and added 10 rebounds as the Iowa Hawkeye women won at Nebraska 88-81 as the Hawks snapped a two game losing streak.
That’s coach Lisa Bluder. Iowa held off a furious Nebraska rally that saw the Huskers slice a 17 point Hawkeye lead to four late in the contest.
Mason City native Megan Meyer played eight-and-a-half minutes for the Hawkeyes but did not score. Iowa is now 7-6 in the Big Ten.
MASON CITY — District wrestling tournaments take place in all three classes on Saturday, with the top two placewinners at each weight qualifying for next week’s state tournament:
== At the 2A district in Humboldt, Osage has 11 district qualifiers, with Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and Emmetsburg each having seven. Forest City has three wrestlers while Clear Lake has two.
== At the 1A district at Clarksville, Lake Mills has eight wrestlers, while Central Springs and Nashua-Plainfield both have seven. North Butler-Clarksville has four, Belmond-Klemme and Riceville each have three, while Newman, Northwood-Kensett, St. Ansgar and West Fork each have two.
== At the 1A in Sioux Rapids, West Hancock has the most district qualifiers with nine with West Sioux and Woodbury Central each having six.
== Mason City is at the 3A district meet in Waverly, hosted by top-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock.
