Forecast predicts heavy snowfall in NYC area next week

A winter storm in early 2025 has the potential to bring heavy snow to the Northeast, including certain areas of New York City.

Forecasters are predicting a storm on Monday, where they anticipate the combination of frigid arctic air and a precipitation system to result in snow.

Arctic air is set to invade the United States, bringing with it rounds of long-lasting cold weather, according to FOX Weather.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, there is a significant pattern change anticipated across a large portion of the country. An Arctic Outbreak is projected to move from the Northern Plains towards the south and east.

As a result, there is a high likelihood of below-normal temperatures in many areas of the East. The National Weather Service shared this information in a post on “X.”

The arctic outbreak is set to commence on Wednesday, with the cold persisting through the first weekend of January. By midweek, high temperatures will plummet by 20-30 degrees compared to Monday.

“Yes, it seems that we might be in for a storm,” said the weather expert.

“We’re anticipating a significant drop in temperatures, particularly along the East Coast, as we enter the early weeks of January,” mentioned FOX Weather Meteorologist Kendall Smith.

Two additional rounds of arctic air are expected to move down from Canada following the initial cold spell. This will result in a prolonged arctic outbreak across certain areas of the United States, with freezing temperatures persisting for an extended period of time.

In the northern regions, the shift in weather patterns brings about the essential element required for snowfall. When a low-pressure system forms and interacts with this cold air, it is highly probable that it will result in snow.

“The complexity of this puzzle continues with the consideration of storminess. Is there a pattern indicating the possibility of multiple storms, particularly winter storms, forming in the east, including the Mississippi River Valley? And the answer is affirmative, as FOX Weather Meteorologist Stephen Morgan suggests, ‘Yeah, it does look like we could have a storm.’”

According to the National Weather Service, there is a possibility of frozen precipitation in the central regions of the country, while the Northeast may experience heavy snowfall.

The National Weather Service stated that there is a chance of frozen precipitation in the Southern Plains and Southeast regions, with the possibility of heavy snowfall spreading north to encompass the Appalachians, Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, and Northeast.
