Color the Wind Kite Festival in Clear Lake canceled due to ice conditions

CLEAR LAKE — The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that the 2024 Color the Wind Kite Festival scheduled for February 17th has been canceled due to deteriorating ice conditions.

Chamber officials in a statement say consistent above-average temperatures in recent weeks have made the ice unsafe to host the festival that drew nearly 20,000 people to Clear Lake last year.

The festival showcases a collection of gigantic inflatable kites flown by dedicated enthusiasts from all corners of the United States. The festival was started by Larry and Kay Day of Clear Lake in 2001 with the Clear Lake Chamber taking over the event in 2022 with guidance from the Days.

This is the third time the festival has had to be canceled due to deteriorating ice conditions, with the first time in 2013 and the other time being in 2017.

Next year’s event is scheduled for February 15th, 2025.
