Clear Lake council approves resolution opposing Alliant requested rate increase

CLEAR LAKE — Clear Lake’s City Council last night approved a resolution opposing the proposed rate increase by Alliant Energy.

Councilman Bennett Smith says the request by the utility company is excessive.  “I certainly do appreciate the work we do with Alliant in partnership locally, but I do think it is important to say publicly that this rate request is very excessive on their part, that’s how I would characterize it. I’m very much happy to oppose it and hopefully the Iowa Utilities Board will take that into account.”

Clear Lake now joins the Mason City City Council and Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors as passing resolutions against the rate increase.

If approved as proposed, it would result in about a 9% increase to the average electric customer’s total bill this October and a second phase increase of about 7% beginning in October 2025.
