Cerro Gordo supervisors pledge $250K toward potential Surf Ballroom CAT grant

MASON CITY — The Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors today approved a $250,000 contribution to be used as a match to a potential Community Attractions and Tourism grant for the Surf Ballroom Music Enrichment & Immersive Center that’s part of the Surf District Destination Iowa project.

Project leaders recently took another look at the Music Enrichment Center and wanted to add immersive technology enhancements to keep it relevant in the future, as it would provide 21st Century technology in an effort to promote the legacy of the Winter Dance Party, its three iconic performers, and music in general.

County supervisor Casey Callanan made the motion to split the contribution over a two-year period with payments of $125,000.

The City of Clear Lake is seeking $960,000 from the CAT program to be used along with the county matching dollars, with the city funding the rest of the potential $1.5 million additional cost for the immersive center upgrades.
