MASON CITY — There’s only one contested race for city council in Mason City on this November’s ballot, as the deadline for filing was last night at 5 o’clock:

=== At-large councilman Paul Adams will be challenged by former councilman Max Weaver. Adams has been serving as one of the two at-large councilman since winning a special election in late 2016. Weaver, who served four years as the Third Ward councilman from 1996 to 1999, and then was elected twice to an at-large seat and served between 2004 and 2011, has lost the last four times he’s ran for city office, and abandoned his candidacy for an at-large seat on the city council in the November 2017 election. The other council seats up for election have uncontested races, with First Ward councilman John Lee and Third Ward councilman Joshua Masson running for re-election.  For the city’s Park Board, there will not be a contested election for the two seats up for election, as incumbent Troy Levenhagen is joined on the ballot by political newcomer Jay Lala. Don Nelson decided not to run for re-election.

=== In Clear Lake, there will not be a contested race in the three council seats on the ballot. At-large councilman Mike Callanan and First Ward councilman Mark Ebeling are running for re-election, while Gary Hugi is once again running for a spot on the council. He served a four-year term in an at-large seat on the council from 2013 to 2017

=== Two incumbents currently seated on the Mason City School Board are running for re-election, two incumbents are not seeking another term, while two others appear to be headed for spots on the board. Incumbents Lorrie Lala and Brent Seaton are running for another term on the board, but two other incumbents, Scott Warren and Doug Campbell, did not file for the election. Katherine Koehler and Kristine Cassel are the other two to file for seats on the board and will not be contested in the election.

=== There will be a contested election for the three seats on the Clear Lake School Board. Incumbents John Brady, Chad Kuhlers and Mike Moeller are running for re-election, and will be joined on the ballot by John Raymond.
