Most Texas drivers will no longer need to ensure their vehicles pass an annual safety exam, as state lawmakers have eliminated this requirement from the Texas code.
Drivers are still required to pay the annual inspection fee of $7.50. However, they will no longer be obligated to physically bring their vehicles in for inspection before registering them.
But there is still one type of vehicle that will need to undergo inspection.
Webb County Tax Assessor-Collector, Patricia Barrera, emphasized the importance of inspections for large vehicles and heavy equipment. She acknowledged that while these vehicles require the Department of Transportation (DOT) certificate, inspections are still necessary in the state of Texas.
Drivers are reminded by Barrera that they will need 30-day insurance when renewing their registration. It is important to note that this law will go into effect on January 1, 2025.
