Kansas City police have launched an investigation into the city’s 140th homicide of 2024. The incident occurred when a teenager was tragically shot inside a residence located near a local high school.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department responded to a shooting incident near Central High School and Middle School. Emergency crews were called to the area of E 33rd and Bales Ave. following reports of the incident.

When the first responders arrived at the scene, they were guided into a house where they discovered a teenage boy who had sustained gunshot wounds. They swiftly transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead.

“There was an overwhelming display of emotions on the block,” shared KCPD Sgt. Phil DiMartino. “Many individuals were in tears, and the streets were filled with people who were deeply affected by the incident. The community was filled with frustration and understandable distress.”

During the initial inquiry, it was determined that the shooting occurred as a result of an argument. Detectives are currently conducting a thorough search of the area in order to identify any possible witnesses, while crime scene investigators are gathering physical evidence.

If you have any information that can help identify and apprehend the person responsible for the shooting, you could be eligible for a $25,000 reward. To report any tips or information, please contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.

“We’re just 10 days away from Christmas, and this has a profound impact on everyone here,” expressed DiMartino. “I want to emphasize to our community that if they have any information, no matter how insignificant they believe it to be, it holds great significance for us. Please reach out to us and contact the TIPS Hotline.”

Kansas City has seen its 140th homicide in 2024, a number that law enforcement officials acknowledge as alarmingly high. At this time, no additional details have been made available regarding the incident.

Sergeant DiMartino expressed his concern over the alarming number of homicides in the city, stating that this case marked the 140th. He emphasized the tragic nature of the situation, particularly the fact that the victim was a juvenile. The impact of such incidents on the community cannot be underestimated.
