Two teens have been indicted in connection with a shooting that injured a 7-year-old girl outside a Starbucks in Harlem last month, prosecutors announced Monday.
Daniel Idowu, 19, and True Womack, 17, face charges of attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Jr.
Court documents reveal that on November 11 at around 2:52 p.m., the two defendants, wearing black clothing and face coverings, walked south on Bradhurst Avenue in Hamilton Heights. They stopped near a Starbucks at West 145th Street, where several people were standing outside.
Idowu and Womack allegedly drew firearms and fired multiple shots toward the group, with one of the bullets striking a 7-year-old girl who was walking past the Starbucks. The girl was shot in the stomach and required surgery to treat injuries to her stomach, liver, and colon.
The suspects fled the scene, running north on Bradhurst Avenue, through Jackie Robinson Park, and onto Edgecombe Avenue. Witnesses called 911, and officers quickly arrived, giving chase.
During the pursuit, Idowu reportedly tried to scale a fence and discarded a gun into the park. Both suspects were apprehended by police, and the firearm was recovered. A second weapon was later found in the park during a subsequent search.
“Thankfully, the child survived, and courageous officers were able to act swiftly to arrest these defendants and prevent further harm,” Bragg said.
“Children are among our most vulnerable citizens and should be protected from the devastating effects of gun violence.
We will continue to hold those who commit such violent acts accountable in Manhattan. I wish the victim a full and speedy recovery.”
