Mexican Citizen Sentenced To 6 Years In Prison For Illegal Re-entry Into U.S

A Mexican citizen, Moises Olivos-Hrucha, has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States. The 31-year-old had previously been deported and managed to return within just five months, leading to his conviction. This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by immigration authorities in preventing individuals from reentering the country unlawfully.

Olivos-Hrucha faced initial charges of illegal reentry after removal in March 2021. He was convicted in May 2021 and received a 27-month sentence in federal prison in January 2022. Upon completing his sentence, he was deported. However, he was discovered back in Texas in October 2023. In May 2024, he pleaded guilty to the charge and on November 19, U.S. District Judge Ada Brown sentenced him to 68 months for the 2024 conviction. Additionally, he received an extra four months for the revocation of supervised release from the 2022 conviction. In total, his sentence amounts to 72 months in federal prison.

Olivos-Hrucha’s extensive criminal record in the U.S. was emphasized by prosecutors. This includes a 2013 robbery conviction where he was sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting a victim. After serving his six-year sentence, Olivos-Hrucha will once again be subject to deportation. The investigation was carried out by Immigration & Customs Enforcement, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Madeleine Case handling the recent case and former NDTX Assistant U.S. Attorney Travis Elder handling the original case.
