According to authorities, a homicide suspect who was on the run from Indiana was apprehended on Saturday night in New Buffalo, thanks to the assistance of a roadside license plate reader.
Sharing information about wanted suspects and their criminal activities has always been a challenge for law enforcement. This challenge is especially pronounced when law enforcement agencies are located across state lines. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office acknowledges the difficulty of efficiently sharing information regarding wanted suspects and their criminal activity.
Police have joined forces with local communities and businesses to acquire and keep license plate reader cameras along public roadways. These cameras, also referred to as LPRs, are designed to passively monitor vehicles and alert patrolling officers in the event of a stolen vehicle or wanted person being identified.
According to the police, the quick action of the deputies resulted in the arrest of a homicide suspect on Saturday night. The suspect was taken into custody on N. Thompson Street near E. Buffalo Street before 8:30 p.m. This was made possible due to the timely response and coordination of the deputies.
At present, the authorities have not disclosed the identity of the suspect, who is a 48-year-old woman from northwest Indiana.
