On Sunday, July 21, 2024, Lululemon’s 14th Street location in Northwest Washington, DC was shut down abruptly following a recent incident where thieves ransacked the store.

In a heartfelt farewell note to its loyal customers, the brand expressed its sincere gratitude for their unwavering support throughout the years. The note, which was shared with the local news site PoPville, conveyed the brand’s deep appreciation for its customers.

“We are closing our location, and our time here is coming to an end. We have cherished being a part of this community and are thankful for the opportunity to have been here.”

The closure of the Lululemon store on 14th Street was likely due to recent thefts that occurred at several of the brand’s locations in Washington DC. Along with the 14th Street store, the Georgetown and Penn Quarter stores were also targeted on the same day. Surveillance footage revealed that four individuals were involved in these thefts, although the specific reasons behind the store’s closure have not been disclosed.

Lululemon has closed down one of its stores, and while the exact reasons for the closure remain unconfirmed, it is part of a broader trend. The company has been downsizing its operations in different cities, and it recently shut down its Pacific Place store in Seattle in April. Additionally, the retail chain is planning to close four more stores in the near future.

With the rise in retail crime across the US, the recent closures of retail stores add to the growing concern. According to the National Retail Federation, retailers lost $112 billion to theft in 2022, which is a substantial increase from $93 billion in 2021. The inflation and economic pressures have made many stores more susceptible to such crimes.

It’s a shame to see Lululemon leaving DC, but it’s a stark reminder of the obstacles retailers are up against in today’s environment. The community will undoubtedly feel the loss as the store had become a go-to destination for fitness enthusiasts and fashion-forward shoppers alike.
