CARROLL — New London scored two in the first and then piled on nine runs in the second on their way to a 16-1, four inning win over Newman in the Class 1A semifinal round at the state baseball tournament in Carroll last night, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com. New London took advantage of five Newman errors in the contest while pounding out 12 hits. Max Burt had the lone run batted in for the Knights, who end their season with a 33-4 record. New London moves on to Friday afternoon’s championship game where they will face St. Mary’s of Remsen. St. Mary’s only needed five innings to beat Kingsley-Pierson 10-0.

FORT DODGE — Regina of Iowa City took advantage of three errors and scored three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to knock off top-ranked Central Springs 7-4 in the Class 2A semifinal round of the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge on Wednesday evening, as you heard on AM-1490/96.7-FM KRIB and kribam.com. Panthers coach BJ Fessler credits the Regals for their outstanding play.

Fessler says his team just made too many mistakes and it cost them in the end.

The Panthers left 11 runners on base in the contest.

Kaylea Fessler and Madisyn Kelley gave Central Springs a 2-0 lead in the first as each hit a home run. Kaci Crum and Azaria McDonough knocked in runs for the Panthers in the fifth inning. Central Springs drops to 32-2 on the season and will face Top of Iowa Conference rival North Union in Friday afternoon’s third-place game at 3:30, a game you’ll hear on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com. North Union fell to Wilton 14-1 in six innings in Wednesday’s other Class 2A semifinal.

FORT DODGE — The Newman softball team survived a seventh-inning rally by St. Mary’s of Remsen and held on for a 5-4 victory in a Class 1A consolation game Wednesday afternoon at the state softball tournament, as you heard on AM-1300 KGLO and kgloam.com. Knights coach Tom Dunn says after a tough 10-0 five-inning loss to North Linn on Tuesday, it was great to pick up a win to end the season.

Dunn says they were able to get back to their style of game after facing a powerhouse North Linn squad.

Newman ends their season with a record of 26-10.

 

 

 

IOWA CITY — Iowa coach Fran McCaffery is not surprised Keegan Murray had a successful debut this summer. The former Hawkeye All-American was named the MVP of the NBA Summer League after averaging more than 23 points and seven rebounds.

McCaffery says Murray knows it gets tougher from here.

Murray shot 50 percent from the field in the summer league and 40 percent from three point range.

Murray was taken fourth in the draft by the Sacramento Kings.
