33 months in prison for Mason City man who illegally purchased guns

MASON CITY — A Mason City man who illegally purchased weapons at a local store has been given a federal prison sentence.

Braiden Despenas was accused of buying four pistols and a rifle from Hart Brothers between October 2017 and May 2018, lying each time about being a marijuana user.

Despenas pleaded guilty to charges of possession of a firearm by a drug user and making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm.

He was sentenced on Thursday in US Federal Court in Cedar Rapids to two years and nine months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
