More details released about Clear Lake jet ski accident

CLEAR LAKE — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has released the names of those involved in a jet ski crash on Clear Lake last week.

The DNR says at about 8:15 Friday night in the area of the 1200 block of North Shore Drive, 15-year-old Kyle Olberding of Glidden was operating a jet ski that struck another carrying three 17-year-old girls from Cedar Falls, McKenna Holahan, Wynee Bond and Ellie Shimp.

Shimp was directly struck by the jet ski and fell into the water. According to a CaringBridge website set up by Shimp’s family, she suffered a tibial plateau fracture and continues to be treated at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Shimp is a competitive swimmer and will be a senior this fall at Cedar Falls High School.

Olberding was cited for reckless use of a watercraft and operation of a watercraft by an underage person without boating education.
