Tumilson laid to rest -- Nelson won't seek re-election
Daily News
ROCKFORD --- Petty Officer 1st Class Jon Thomas Tumilson was buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford earlier today after a standing-room only crowd packed the Rockford Senior High gymnasium this morning. Tumilson had a dream of being a  Navy SEAL, even writing about wanting to be a part of the special force when he was a teen growing up in the town of Rockford. Tumilson’s comrade in the Navy Boe Nankivel told those at the funeral that Tumilson was one of the highest respected of the SEALs and that he had an impact on everybody. Tumilson’s sisters say that their brother believe what he was doing in Afghanistan was making a difference and he didn’t back away from the danger it brought.

MASON CITY --- Mason City's third-ward councilman Don Nelson has announced he will not be seeking re-election to another term. In a letter to KGLO News he says, "it's time to step aside and provide other citizens in Ward Three the opportunity to serve our fine community. You may have not always agreed with my position on specific issues, but I have made a serious attempt to what I sincerely thought was always in the best interest of the majority of our Mason City citizens. It has been my pleasure to serve. Thank you for all your support during my tenure on the City Council. I still have four months left on my final term to continue to serve." No one has announced their intent to run for the seat. Fellow councilman Jeff Marsters announced earlier this month he'd not seek re-election to his First Ward seat. The other incumbent up for election, at-large councilman Max Weaver, has not announced his intent about the upcoming election yet.

Man arrested after standoff on Mason City's north side
Breaking News MASON CITY --- A Mason City man charged with breaking into a synagogue and stealing sound equipment earlier this year is under arrest again, this time after a standoff on the city’s north side Thursday night. 39-year-old William O’Dell has been arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and domestic assault. Mason City police say in a news release that they received a report of a domestic situation in the 15-hundred block of North Madison. After further investigation, it was discovered that O’Dell, who is a convicted felon, was in possession of a firearm, which is illegal. Officers attempted to serve criminal citations but didn’t receive any response, with officers later determining that he had barricaded himself inside the house at 1514 North Madison. At around 8:30 PM, members of the North Central Iowa Narcotics Drug Task Force Special Operations Group and Iowa State Patrol negotiators made contact with O’Dell. O’Dell then surrendered without incident and was taken to the Cerro Gordo County Jail where he remains on $5-thousand bond. O’Dell was also arrested in late June in connection with the June 5th break-in at the Adas Israel Synagogue and is charged with second-degree theft. O’Dell has pleaded not guilty to that charge and his trial on that charge is set for September 13th.

Arrests made in Mason City's first murder since 2008
Breaking News MASON CITY --- Police have arrested three people in connection with the murder of a Mason City man at a convenience store on the city’s north side yesterday afternoon. Police Chief Michael Lashbrook says they’ve arrested 31-year-old Jamaal Leslie and charged him with first-degree murder. Leslie is accused by police of shooting 27-year-old Brandon Crawford after a brief argument near the Casey’s at 813 North Federal. Crawford was taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa where he was later pronounced dead. In addition to the murder charge against Leslie, police have filed charges against 24-year-old Winsdell Lamb and 46-year-old Donya Lee, as being Accessories After the Fact, an aggravated misdemeanor. Lamb and Lee are alleged to have been involved in trying to withhold information related to the investigation. Both have been arrested and are currently in the Cerro Gordo County Jail. The investigation into the murder of Crawford continues, and if anyone has more information regarding the incident, they are asked to contact Mason City Police at 421-36
