Becker pleads not guilty, demands speedy trial
Breaking News ALLISON --- The man accused of killing Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas has entered a written plea of not guilty in Butler County District Court. 24-year-old Mark Becker entered the written plea late Thursday, waiving his right to an arraignment in open court that was scheduled for tomorrow. Becker has also stated in his written plea that he demands a speedy trial, meaning that under the Iowa rules of criminal procedure that he has a right to stand trial on the charge within 90 days of the filing of trial information. Becker is accused of entering the weight room at A-P High School on June 24th and shooting Thomas, who later died at a Waterloo hospital. Judge Stephen Carroll last week continued Becker’s cash-only bond in the amount of $1 (M) million. If convicted of first-degree murder, Becker would face the mandatory term of life in prison without the opportunity for parole.
