Veterans Day
KGLO Special MASON CITY --- Veterans Day ceremonies were held throughout north-central Iowa this morning, including in Mason City. Despite the rain today, dedication ceremonies were held in Central Park to honor the 80 names that have been added to the veterans monument. Events moved indoors to the VFW Post 733 Home, where the guest speaker was William Stuflick of Clear Lake. Stuflick served 14 years in the Air Force working in civil engineering squadrons, and now is a disabled veteran outreach program specialist and disability navigator for the Iowa Workforce Development Center in Mason City. Stuflick’s address keyed in on the dropping number of members involved in organizations like the VFW, and hopes the support will be there in the future for those who have served our country. Recently Stuflick’s Workforce Development Center region was awarded a Veterans’ Service Grant for providing outstanding services to Iowa veterans, which led to the region participating in a national study on veterans’ issues by the University of California at Berkeley.

You can hear Stuflick’s entire address by going to our website…click right here .

Obama Wins
Breaking News FOR MORE ELECTION NIGHT COVERAGE, CLICK ON THIS LINK FOR CBS NEWS WEBSITE COVERAGE

CHICAGO (AP) - It's a night of celebration in Barack Obama's
hometown.
Thousands of the president-elect's supporters welcomed his
election tonight in a joyous victory celebration at Chicago's Grant
Park.
The park where police fought anti-war protesters during the
turbulent 1968 Democratic convention - was transformed by white
tents and a stage lined with American flags and hung with red,
white and blue bunting.
The crowd erupted in cheers each time an Obama victory was
announced. There were also tears. The Reverend Jesse Jackson was
among those who wept.
The next big event: the arrival of the next president of the
United States.

70 years ago today on the radio....
KGLO Special The "War of the Worlds" was an episode of the American radio drama anthology series "Mercury Theatre on the Air". It was performed as a Halloween episode of the series on October 30, 1938 and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. Directed and narrated by Orson Welles, the episode was an adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds.

The first two thirds of the 60-minute broadcast was presented as a series of simulated news bulletins, which suggested to many listeners that an actual Martian invasion was in progress. Compounding the issue was the fact that the Mercury Theatre on the Air was a 'sustaining show' (i.e., it ran without commercial breaks), thus adding to the dramatic effect. Although there were sensationalist accounts in the press about a supposed panic, careful research has shown that while thousands were frightened, there is no evidence that people fled their homes or otherwise took action. The news-bulletin format was decried as cruelly deceptive by some newspapers and public figures, leading to an outcry against the perpetrators of the broadcast, but the episode launched Welles to fame.
