Steckman wins House District 13 primary
Breaking News
11:00 PM, June 3, 2008
by Bob Fisher

MASON CITY --- Sharon Steckman received just under 80-percent of the votes in yesterday’s primary election to take the Democratic nomination for the 13th District in the Iowa House. Steckman received one-thousand-92 votes, almost one-thousand more than Lionel Foster, who finished second with only 177. Tex Newman finished third with 101. Steckman says she was thrilled with the victory. She says the hard work paid off with a number of supporters and contacting over 3-thousand people in the district to get their views on the issues. Steckman taught in the Mason City school district for 27 years and was president of the Mason City Education Association. She says that the state’s education system is headed in the right direction. Steckman says there are several issues that need to be addressed in state government. She says she wants to make sure that the state is fiscally sound, and give more emphasis to healthcare and the environment, as well as listening to the concerns of Mason City residents. Steckman will face current Mason City City Councilman Scott Tornquist, who was unopposed in the Republican primary.

Parkersburg Tornado an EF5
Breaking News
PARKERSBURG --- NWS personnel have rated the Parkersburg-New Hartford-Dunkerton tornado as   EF 5 (correlated to wind speeds up to 205 MPH) on the Enhanced Fujita Scale at the locations of maximum damage.  Additional details on path length, width, etc. will be posted on this webpage Wednesday, May 28.  This is the first EF5 tornado in Iowa since the Jordan tornado of June 13, 1976.

A large and destructive tornado moved across Butler and Black Hawk counties on Sunday May 25th.  The initial touchdown occurred near the Butler and Grundy county line, 2 miles south of Aplington at 4:48 pm CDT and quickly grew in size and intensity as it approached Parkersburg.  The tornado was nearly 3/4s of a mile wide as it moved through the southern end of Parkersburg at 4:59 pm CDT.  Significant structural damage occurred in the town of Parkersburg including 100 to 200 homes destroyed.  The tornado maintained size and intensity as it move towards New Hartford.  At 5:09 pm CDT the storm moved just north of New Hartford once again causing significant structural and tree damage.  The tornado weakened around 3 miles east of New Hartford with lesser damage as it moved east to north of the Waterloo and Cedar Falls area.  Significant straight line winds occurred along and just south of the tornado track with preliminary estimates of 90 to 100 mph.   The tornado then grew in size to near 1.2 miles wide north of Dunkerton causing substantial damage to a farmstead there.   The tornado lifted just before entering Buchanan county.

Death toll dropped to six for now....View pictures of destruction
Breaking News

Updated 7:55 PM, Monday, May 26th, 2008

PARKERSBURG, Iowa (AP) - Officials said a deadly tornado that swept through the small town of Parkersburg destroyed more than 200 homes and damaged hundreds more.
The Sunday afternoon tornado killed six people, including four in Parkersburg. Two others died in the nearby town of New Hartford.
Rescuers were still picking through the ruins, but officials said they were hopeful that no other victims would be found. About 70 people were injured, including two in critical condition.
The number of buildings damaged was staggering: 222 homes destroyed, 21 businesses destroyed and more than 400 homes damaged. Among the buildings destroyed were the city hall, high school and the city's sole grocery store and gas station.
Gov. Chet Culver has issued a disaster proclamation for Blackhawk, Buchanan and Butler counties, a move that helps coordination between state and local authorities. He said National Guard troops were arriving Monday to aid in the cleanup.

PARKERSBURG --- At least four of the six victims have now been identified by either authorities, relatives or funeral homes:

= 74-year-old Ray Meyocks of Parkersburg, who made it to shelter during the storm but later died of heart failure as neighbors pulled him from the rubble of his severely damaged home.

= 71-year-old Leasa Bleeker of New Hartford

= 71-year-old Shirley Luhring of Parkersburg

= 48-year-old Norman Beuthing of New Hartford

PARKERSBURG --- One of those who survived Sunday night’s Parkersburg tornado says you should always pay attention to what the weather man says when severe weather strikes. Dennis Schipper and his wife had been living in the same house on Parkersburg’s southeast side since 1968, and both were lucky enough to escape the tornado. Schipper says his weather radio saved not only his life but the life of his wife, sounding when the tornado warning was issues. Schipper says they went down to the basement to take cover and that the tornado lasted for only about 30 to 60 seconds. Schipper chatted with Bob Fisher and other reporters and were later joined in the conversation by Governor Chet Culver, Senator Charles Grassley, Representative Bruce Braley, and State Representative Pat Grassley. You can hear their conversation by clicking right here.

At least seven dead in tornadoes
Breaking News
State officials say at least seven dead in Iowa storms.

Updated at 10:00 PM --- Sunday May 25, 2008

PARKERSBURG, Iowa (AP) - A state official says seven people were killed and dozens more injured as a storm ripped through a rural area in northeastern Iowa.
The storm, which hit just after 5 p.m. Sunday, leveled the southern half of Parkersburg, a town of about 1,000. The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado struck Parkersburg.
Iowa Homeland Security administrator Dave Miller says that of the seven dead, five were from Parkersburg and two were from nearby New Hartford. At least 50 injuries were reported.
Miller says state officials are still assesing damage and that more injuries and fatalities are possible.

PARKERSBURG --- At least three people in Butler County have died after yesterday’s tornadoes that struck the Parkersburg and New Hartford areas on Sunday afternoon. Butler County Auditor Holly Fokkena says they are asking people to stay away from the area and allow emergency crews to pick up the pieces. Fokkena says besides the devastation in Parkersburg and New Hartford, people in the community of Sinclair just east of Parkersburg were evacuated after the twister tore through their area. She says the tornado traveled east out of Parkersburg and struck the Sinclair Elevator, destroying a very large anhydrous ammonia storage tank, forcing the evacuation of a large number of rural residences. Fokkena says a dozen homes and numerous other buildings were damaged in the New Hartford.
